The 22-year-old Three Lions and Arsenal midfielder looks to take up the vacated position left by former England captain Steven Gerrard

Arsenal star midfielder Jack Wilshere has vowed to learn from Juventus maestro Andrea Pirlo, and Argentine ace Javier Mascherano, and grow into the holding midfield position after playing in the deeper midfield role for England's Monday night Euro 2016 qualifier game against Switzerland.

The 22-year-old has come under a lot of criticism lately over what has been a disappointing two seasons for the Englishman, with Paul Scholes and Jamie Redknapp the two biggest names to have blasted the Gunners ace after failing to turn all the hype and potential surrounding Wilshere into tangible growth on the pitch.

The midfielder is definitely one of England's most talented playmakers despite the below par displays, but with the retirement of long-serving Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, Roy Hodgson opted on handing Wilshere the vacated holding midfield position, a role Jack admits to enjoying.

“I spoke with the manager and Gary Neville in the week and they told me they wanted me to play that role and I quite enjoyed it,” Wilshere told the FA's official website.

But with the retirement of Steven Gerrard back in July, the Arsenal ace might be called upon to replace the long-serving Liverpool captain

“It was my first time ever playing there, so over the next month or so I am going to look at a few videos of the game and of players who play in that position regularly - Pirlo, Mascherano and players like that and I'll get better.

“I felt it went well tonight but next time we meet up I feel it can only go better.”

Whilst Wilshere remained optimistic about making the new midfield role for the Three Lions his own, there was not a hence of doubt when discussing newly-signed Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck's goalscoring talent.

The Manchester United youth academy product packed up his bags and headed for the Emirates Stadium, signing for the north London side on the transfer window's deadline day for an estimated £16m.

And though there was skepticism amongst the Arsenal faithful regarding the new acquisition, optimism over the 23-year-old is on a high after Welbeck netted a brace past Switzerland in the game in Basel.

“He really enjoys playing up front,' said Wilshere. “He hasn't had that opportunity over the past few years and you could tell that tonight he really wanted to prove a point.

“When he gets in front of goal he's as good as they get.'”
