Iceland and Turkey will face one another at the Laugardalsvöllur in a Euro 2016 Qualification match on Tuesday, the 9th of September.

The two sides failed to make it to the last 32 in the recently concluded World Cup and will be hoping they can be among the 16 teams which compete in the Euro 2016 which will be held in France. Heimir Hallgrímsson who shares the managerial post with Swedish international Lars Lagerbäck will be under immense pressure to guide the Iceland side to only their first major tournament.

The Nordic national came very close to clinching a place in the World Cup held at Brazil but were defeated by Croatia in the play-off match. Their World Cup Qualification journey will definitely give them confidence to strive even harder for their ambitions, but their task has been difficult after being paired in a relatively tricky group.

Iceland are part of group A which also consists of Netherlands, Czech Republic, Latvia and Kazakhstan along with Turkey. The top two teams from every group will earn an automatic qualification whereas the third placed team will have to contest in a play-off to determine its place in Europe’s top competition.

However their meteoric rise in recent years will be a concern for their counterparts who should know that Iceland can be a very difficult team to beat. Ranked 131st in April 2012, Iceland are now 46th in the FIFA rankings and may have a fair advantage over the likes of Turkey and Czech Republic.

Turkey coach Fatih Terim has refused to take Iceland lightly but is also adamant of making it to Euro 2016 having failed to qualify for any of the last two major tournaments.

“We will play against a very good, physical team, and we must be careful,” Terim told reporters.

“Iceland is a team you must be careful against in every minute of the game,” he said.

“In the recent years, they have added technical capacity to their well-known strength. We must be careful.”

“Of course it is important to finish in a good position, but it is also important to make a good start,” said Terim. “I want my players to use their all energy on the pitch. I am sure that it will be good game, and hopefully we will win.”
