Ghana are in Group E with the likes of Guinea, Emmanuel Adebayor’s Togo and The Cranes of Uganda. Since 1992, the Ugandans have failed to qualify for the continent’s biggest tournament. Against the Black Stars of Ghana, the Cranes are clearly the underdogs. Even the Ghanaians’ current situation may not favour Uganda.

Indeed, Ghana enter the 2015 AFCON qualifying campaign with hardly anything to show off. It has been three decades since they last conquered Africa and their miserable adventure at the 2014 FIFA World Cup is something all supporters prefer to forget.

Ghana’s high expectations in Brazil were completely smashed as indiscipline and remuneration problems stole the show. A group stage exit is never what they wanted but this is how their adventure at their third World Cup appearance had to end: with a single point out of a possible nine, and multiple scandals hitting the news.

While the fiasco at the 2014 World Cup continues to be investigated, the national football team’s players and coach must focus on winning games. At this point, nothing but a series of victories would win back the affection of angry Ghanaian fans.

Captain Asamoah Gyan is fully aware of the pressure that weights on the shoulders of everyone in the camp. Upon his arrival from Dubai where he plays for Al Ain, the prolific goalscorer told All Sports GH:

“I’m calling on the players to all come to Ghana and let’s plan on how to approach the game. We have to make sure we make everybody happy because we know the fans are not happy from our performance at the World Cup.

“It’s a great feeling to come back and play for your country. It’s a good thing and I’m really happy to be back in Ghana. And as always, I will give off my best to the Black Stars on Saturday.”

Uganda are poised to suffer from Ghana’s strong desire to deliver. The Cranes already lost 2-0 to Niger in a warm-up match on Tuesday.
