After becoming a free agent, Ashley Cole will likely join Roma next season.

After not receiving a renewal offer from Chelsea, Ashley Cole is now a free agent. As one would expect with players of his caliber, Cole’s status as free agent only lasted a couple of days, as Roma swooped in to close a deal.

Ashley Cole failed to make Roy Hodgson's final 23-man squad leaving for Brazil

The English left back, undeservedly snubbed by Roy Hodgson, as the results in Brazil clearly showed, now wishes to leave England for a different destination. As his agent, Jonathan Barnett, reported:

“At the moment it is only clubs based abroad - there may be other developments, but for the moment, that is all we are talking. The situation is that we are talking to several clubs.”

Walter Sabadini, Roma’s director of football, immediately visited the player to find an agreement that now seems to be a done deal, as Ashley Cole is expected to conclude his medical on Monday.

Cole scored 7 goals in 229 appearances with Chelsea

Meanwhile, Liverpool have tried to make a final assault, but the English defender preferred Roma’s project. The 33-year-old also rejected the many offers coming from the MLS and other clubs, to reach an agreement with the Giallorossi.
