The Algeria national football team will donate their World Cup prize money to the poor in Gaza

The Algerian national football team's players will donate their World Cup prize money to the underprivileged in the city of Gaza, according to striker Islam Slimani.

The North African side impressed many with their group stage displays, grabbing second spot ahead of Russia and Korea Republic, finishing five points behind group H leaders Belgium.

This was the first time in history that Les Fennecs made the round of 16, but it looked to be the furthest they would reach as they were paired against European giants Germany.

Although they eventually crashed out of the tournament, Vahid Halilhodžić men put in an inspirational performance, going toe-to-toe with Joachim Low's side, pushing the match into extra time before falling to a slim 2-1 loss.

The side returned home on Wednesday to a huge welcoming crowd who were their to congratulate their national team for their heroics in Brazil.

And now their off-field actions are making the world even more proud with their act of generosity. 

"They need it more than us," said Slimani, the Sporting Lisbon forward, making this promise on behalf of him and his team-mates.
