Bad news for Belgium as two of the Red Devils' star defenders look set to miss out on their match against USA

Belgium’s hopes of booking their quarter-final spot has taken a blow as Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is set to miss out on their round of 16 clash with USA.

The Gunners skipper picked up a knock in the European team's clash with Russia and has now been rulled out of the Red Devils all-important tie against Jurgen Klinssman’s side.

In a statement by the national team boss Marc Wilmots, the Arsenal captain will be available for a last 8 match, if they make it, but today’s fixture comes too early due to his hamstring injury.

“Thomas, though, has not enough time to be fit by tomorrow. He will be fit if we make the quarterfinals," said Wilmots.

"He will return to full squad training in a day or two. Marouane is fine, no problem.”

The defensive worries pile on as the group H leaders’ boss also admitted team captain and Manchester City center back Vincent Kompany is a doubt for the crucial match, saying:

“I don’t know about Vincent and whether he will be fit,” Wilmots confessed. “We will see how it evolves.”
