Saturday’s Brazil vs. Chile match on ABC – a thriller in which host nation Brazil advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup on penalty kicks – earned a 3.8 US household rating and 6,142,000 viewers, based on Nielsen fast nationals, makingit the highest-rated non-U.S. team match ever in the Round of 16.
Also on Saturday, ABC’s Colombia vs. Uruguay telecast earned a 3.3 rating and 5,362,000 viewers.
Through the first 50 matches, ESPN’s coverage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup is averaging a 2.3 rating and 3,653,000 viewers, increases of 28 percent (1.8 in 2010) and 31 percent (2,791,000), respectively, from four years ago. To date, the highest-rated markets on the ESPN networks are Washington, D.C. (4.1), New York (3.7), San Francisco (3.5), Los Angeles (3.3) and Orlando (3.2).
Round of 16 Continues
ESPN’s coverage of the FIFA World Cup continues with a pair of Round of 16 matches Monday on ESPN: France vs. Nigeria (11:30 a.m. ET) and Germany vs. Algeria (3:30 p.m.). The much-anticipated Belgium vs. USA match is Tuesday, July 1, at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN, ESPN3, WatchESPN, and ESPN Radio.
