Some will say that Wayne Rooney did not have his best match against Italy. With that said, fans took to Twitter to show their discontent with the England striker's performance.

Wayne Rooney did not enjoy a great domestic campaign, and the Manchester United striker is now under fire after just one match in the World Cup.

Apart from his perfectly measured pass to assist Daniel Sturridge for England’s first and only goal against Italy, Rooney was not all that impressive. When he had the ball, he did not go at defenders or create much offense, unlike Liverpool duo Raheem Sterling and Sturridge.

Late in the second half, Rooney had two shots at Sirigu, but both chances went wide.

His first came on an individual play, where a change of pace allowed him to get to the top of the box, but he pulled his shot just wide of the left post. Later in the second half, Rooney managed to get himself into the box, but again, he missed just wide.

Although he is getting a lot of criticism, Roy Hodgson has come to the defense of his striker.

“I think it’s very harsh to say he didn’t look comfortable on the left,” Hodgson told the BBC.

“I thought he actually did very well and set up our goal with a fine piece of play. We know we can play Wayne in many different positions and I think he has to be pretty satisfied with his performance.”

Fans on Twitter were not as understanding with Rooney’s performance:
