Just hours before Brazil's World Cup opening game against Croatia, protesters appeared in the vicinity of the stadium.

While most cities in Brazil displayed a very festive atmosphere, dressing up streets and neighborhoods, some protesters showed up in the vicinity of Sao Paolo’s stadium where Brazil will play Croatia later today.

Although the majority of the protesters in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo were peaceful, a small number unexpectedly began to throw rocks at the police and set trashcans on fire.

The police answered by firing rubber bullets and tear-gas on the crowds, injuring innocent people, including a CNN producer. Paula Machado, an English teacher who was protesting the ridiculous spending of the Brazilian government for the World Cup, said:

“The police response was absurd. This is a violation of our rights.”

The protest, which started over a year ago, criticizes the enormous amount of money spent on the international tournament. The spending is believed to be approximately $11 billion, and a disrespect towards underpaid workers in Brazil.
