About Liga Dominicana de Fútbol
Liga Dominicana de Fútbol History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Liga Dominicana de Fútbol is a club football competition held in the Dominican Republic. It was launched in 2015 and is widely regarded as the top football category in that country. It replaced the Primera División de República Dominicana and the Liga Mayor, the first amateur leagues in the country.
The Liga Dominicana does not have an established lower-tier category underneath it, which means there is no promotion or relegation from it. The number of teams playing the competition has fluctuated from ten to eight, but the format has stayed the same. Each season, all teams get to face each other twice during the regular season, and once it comes to an end, the top six enter a postseason phase. The next step eliminates two more teams, setting up the semifinals and the title match, which are played on a home-and-away format, with the better-ranked team hosting the return leg on both phases. Extra time and penalties are used to determine the winner in case of a draw.
Coverage of this tournament has been awarded to CDN, who cover the competition via CDN Deportes. Streaming rights were awarded to CTV, while additional content is also available via the league’s YouTube channel. All streaming rights for this league were negotiated until 2026.
