About Copa del Rey

The Spanish Copa del Rey is the second most relevant football competition in Spain. This tournament saw the light in 1902, and its full name is “Campeonato de España – Copa de Su Majestad el Rey" which translates to "Championship of Spain – Cup of His Majesty the King".

Barcelona is the most winning club in this competition, with thirty titles and forty-one Copa del Rey final appearances. Los Blaugranas established a record for most consecutive titles recently, as they won the title from 2014 to 2018.

The 2018-19 edition of this tournament saw Barcelona’s impressive streak come to an end after Valencia shocked them with a 2-1 win in extra time. Los Naranjeros won their eighth Copa del Rey title in May, while Barcelona lost their 11th Copa del Rey final in history.

This competition has seen its format change through time. The first Copa del Rey championship was played by only three teams, while the most recent edition was played by 84 sides. This year, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) decided to include more teams to give the tournament a new look.

The 2019-20 edition of this tournament will see over 110 teams making a run for the title. The competition will be played through eight rounds, with all ties from the preliminary round up to the semi-finals being decided in just one game (set to be played at the stadium of the lower-tier team in each tie). The tournament will begin on November 13, 2019, with the final set to be played at a neutral venue on April 18, 2020. The winner of this competition will earn a spot in the 2020-21 UEFA Europa League.

For the first time in history, the Copa del Rey will welcome regional teams. Twenty clubs will enter the preliminary round, and ten will be lucky enough to join professional clubs en route to the final. All in all, the total amount of teams involved in the competition will rise from 84 to 126, and with each round being played on a one-match format (excluding the semi-finals), all top-tier teams will have a chance to avoid the fatigue of playing a wider amount of games just when their calendars start to get a bit crowded.
