DStv App history, coverage, features
DStv, short for Digital Satellite Television, is a direct satellite broadcasting service owned and operated by MultiChoice. It was founded in 1995 and its headquarters are in South Africa. The service provides satellite TV to most of the Sub-Saharan region in Africa, with most of its subscribers living in South Africa and Nigeria.
DStv’s origins go back to 1986, when pay-television came to South Africa via M-Net, a single channel service which was also handled by MultiChoice. Later, DStv was launched on October 6, 1995, with some of its original channels being M-Net, MGM, TNT, Sci-Fi Universal, SuperSport, ESPN, Cartoon Network, BBC World News, CNN International, and Sky News, to name a few.
Over the years, DStv has offered users a wide variety of packages that differ from the region it covers. The packages can give users access to entertainment channels, sports networks, free-to-air channels, movie-oriented channels, and more. Each package comes with a different cost, as there are more channels and capabilities with each one of them.
Speaking about sports, some of the networks available on DStv have included Supersport, Ginx eSports, TellyTrack, ESPN, and more. All broadcasting rights owned by the channels are available to watch on all devices.
DStv also launched an app for mobile devices called DStv Now, which would later be rebranded simply as DStv in October 2020. The service also offers most of the channels for users to watch on-the-go, while DVR capabilities have also been included in the app depending on the region where the user is located.
As stated before, DStv was launched as an analog service, but it later evolved to include HD channels from 2011 forward. Users will have access to a wider number of HD channels depending on the kind of package they acquired.
