Spain will be looking for a much improved performance after being at the receiving end of a 5-1 drubbing at the hand of Netherlands in their opening game.

Holland produced the shock of the tournament subjecting World Champions Spain to a humiliating 5-1 defeat, in a match Spain always looked second best. It was a game characterized by individual brilliance from some of the Dutch players who capitalized on every error their counterparts committed
Their horror performance means that there will definitely be a few changes when La Roja face Chile in their second match off the tournament, a team they would be foolish to undermine. Iker Casillas despite of his terrible performance is likely to maintain his place, also given the fact that Man United first choice goalkeeper David De Gea has been declared a doubt for the rest of the tournament after picking up a leg injury.

Gerard Pique on the other hand might not be very lucky and is likely to face the axe to be replaced by Javi Martinez at the heart of the defence. The Barcelona man was never up to the task and it was his error after he played Robin Van Persie onside, which led to the first goal of the match. The former Man United defender was repeatedly toyed by Arjen Robben who seemed unstoppable and repeatedly tore apart the Spanish defence with his blistering runs.

Midfield maestro Xavi Hernandez also has his place in the starting line-up put in jeopardy. The Barcelona veteran produced an unproductive performance and Vicente Del Bosque might opt to demote him to the bench with Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke and new Chelsea signing Cesc Fabregas both looking to pounce at any opportunity they get.

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has rallied the troops and encouraged them to pick up their game in what will prove to be a very important match for Spain.

"This is a collective matter," he said. "All of us can go back home or all of us can stay here fighting. There are internal thinking and conversations to learn from our mistakes and the things we need to improve."

"We should stop thinking what this team has done in the last six years. We are, right now, in the same position as we were four years ago, with the difference that we need to do more goals this time.

"We believe in this team. We have got that respect, we have a perfect opportunity next Wednesday against Chile.

"Football changes so quickly, and that gives you the opportunity to change things and we believe we can make it, we still have a good chance."

Alonso also insisted that Spain must respect their counterparts on Wednesday and described them as potent opponents.

"Chile play their games with the same style," he added. "They are very brave and never try to wait for you, they are aggressive, very intense, we know them well and they know us."

Chile on the other hand produced a dominant performance against Australia in their opening fixture and will be looking to pick up from where they left off. Arturo Vidal lasted an hour when Chile played their first match of the tournament. The Juventus midfielder looked far from being fully fit and Jorge Sampaoli will be hoping his star midfielder can be in a better shape when they face a Spanish side which will be out for blood.

Wednesday’s encounter will put Alexis Sanchez against several of his club team mates but there will be no time for a happy reunion. The Barcelona man has been the star of the national side and was the most influential players as Chile defeated Australia 3-1. Sanchez has been involved in seven of the eight goals Chile have scored, which includes six assists and one goal. On Wednesday he will be hoping to reduce Spain’s chances of qualifying to the next round by producing a top performance, something which he has been doing for a while now for both club and country.

However in doing so Chile will have to defy history with the South American side having never beaten Spain in ten meetings. Spain on the other hand will still be fancying their chances, having won the World Cup in its last edition after losing their opening match at the hands of Switzerland.
