Netherlands vs Spain Match Preview

Angela Asante, Jul 11th 2010
The Netherland vs Spain fixture is maybe not the final that all football fans were dreaming about at the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. However, both Holland and Spain have incredible colorful supporters and a large range of top players who will all make sure that this 2010 FIFA World Cup final becomes one to remember forever.

Holland Too bad for all the 3 millions of fans who wanted to get tickets for the final on Sunday! The gigantesque Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg can "only" satisfy 94,000 spectators with seats. But you can join Live Soccer TV as we preview the Netherlands vs Spain match from different angles before following the match live on the Netherlands vs Spain match page!

Holland Coach Bert van Marwijk Not Afraid Of Spain

Whether they play the best football or not, the Spanish have managed to dominate in each and every 2010 World Cup match they'v played. Even the one they lost to Switzerland saw them controlling the game throughout; the problem for Spain on that day is that the ball just couldn’t cross the Swiss’ goal line. Chile, Honduras, Portugal, Paraguay, and Germany also all had to chase the game and try to find a way out to top the Spaniards in the end. However, Vicente del Bosque’s side made it impossible for these teams to clinch at least a draw.

Besides the fact that Spain let their opponents suffer with a remarkable rate of ball possession, they always find the moment of truth to accomplish their missions on a positive note.

David VilHolland Coach Bert van Marwijkla came at the rescue of the Spanish most of times while Carles Puyol stood out as the hero in the semi-finals with his 73rd minute goal against Germany being enough to fire the 2008 European Champions into the final of the World Cup for the first time in their history.

However, all these facts don’t bother Holland the least – not even history (which tells that the Netherlands have lost in each of their only two World Cup final appearances) inflicts fear on the Dutch. Coach Bert van Marwijk stated that Holland “are not afraid” and boldly declared his confidence about his team’s chance to succeed.

“I will tell the players [how to deal with Spain’s possessive football], but I won’t explain it here,” the manager said at a press conference.

“I don’t care even if the whole world calls Spain favorites. The game will be about two countries facing each other who want to win and who can win. We believe in ourselves. We have respect for Spain, but we don’t fear them.”

The Netherlands’ current national football team is perhaps not the best one – not in terms of achievement but in terms of performance. The Dutch became popular for the ‘total football’ in the 1970s with Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff transforming into legends. But for a reason or another, the Netherlands couldn’t manage to win the World Cup despite reaching the final in 1974 and in 1978.

For winger Arjen Robben, Holland’s lack of attractive football presently doesn’t matter. This is how the Bayern Munich play maker explained his position:

“I would prefer to win a very ugly game than to lose a beautiful one. The point is that we are in a World Cup final. Actually, it doesn’t matter how you play. Of course, we want to play good football but our priority is about the result. We’ve heard a lot of compliment about how nice our football is. But that gets you nowhere. We want to achieve something.”

Holland's Arjen RobbenHolland and The Wesley Sneijder Factor

Key player Wesley Sneijder echoed Arjen Robben’s desire to win by declaring:

“We won each of our qualifying games and then every game since we’ve been here [in South Africa]. We won’t allow Spain to beat us now.”

Talking about Wesley Sneijder, he is the particular player that Spain’s Sergio Busquets aims to stop. The Barcelona man, who lost to Wesley Sneijder’s Inter Milan in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League last season, is aware of how creative and dangerous Sneijder is. Sharing his thoughts ahead of the 2010 World Cup final, Sergio Busquets affirmed:

“The Netherlands are a great team. They are very effective on the break because they have very quick forward players. I think that Sneijder is always behind Holland’s most dangerous moves. That’s because he is the one who pulls the strings for them in attack. But we will do our best to stop him from playing.”

2010 FIFA World Cup Final: Netherlands vs Spain – Many Things To Look Out ForSpanish players celebrating.

There are so many interesting points that only contribute in making the Netherlands vs Spain match an even more exciting one. LiveSoccerTV.com numbers a host of things among many which you should look out for:

1) Let’s see if Wesley Sneijder can inspire the Netherlands as he comes up against a bunch of Barcelona stars which he defeated under an Inter Milan shirt. Wesley Sneijder vs Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Pedro, Carles Puyol, and Gerard Pique. Who will win?

2) Let’s see if former Real Madrid players Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben can haunt former Real Madrid team mates which they left on a sour note. Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben vs Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos. Who will win?

3) Let’s see if Spain can be far less wasteful than they have been throughout the 2010 FIFA World Cup so far as they have scored only 7 goals in 6 games despite possessing numerous chances in attack.

4) Let’s see if Spain’s Carles Puyol can finally retire from international football with the planet’s most prestigious sports trophy in his hands – the FIFA World Cup title.

5) Let’s see if Spain’s Fernando Torres will finally open his account with at least a goal in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday.

6) Let’s see if Robin van Persie can finally steal the spotlight after going through a run of unconvincing performances for the Netherlands since the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
