About EFL Trophy

The EFL Cup is a football knockout tournament played each year by all English football teams ranked in the top leagues in the country (English Premier League, English Championship, League 1 and League 2).

The Football League Cup is one of the three top domestic tournaments in England, alongside the FA Cup and the Premier League. The competition’s first edition was played back in the 1960-1961 season, with Aston Villa being the first club to win it.

The tournament is divided into seven rounds, being played mostly with a single-leg format until the semi-final stage of the competition. Top tier teams are handed byes to enter the tournament until the later stages, in order to facilitate their road to the final, which is always played at Wembley Stadium.

Liverpool is the most successful team in the competition, having won eight trophies up to this date. Aston Villa and Chelsea have won the competition five times. Manchester United also joined that "5-title club" back in February 2017 by defeating Southampton 3-2 at Wembley to clinch the title. The winning goal was scored by none other than Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Did you know?

No team has lost more League Cup finals than two-time EFL Cup champions Arsenal. With five runners-up finishes (1968, 1969, 1988, 2007 and 2011), the Gunners have encountered more heartbreaks than Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur (four final defeats each).
