About Primeira Liga

The Primeira Liga aka Liga PT is the top level flight of professional football in Portugal. The league is contested by 18 clubs each season but the title race is dominated by the "Big Three": Benfica, Porto, and Sporting. These clubs have won a total of 80 titles between them. Outside of the "Big Three", there has ever only been two other teams that have won the Primeira Liga: Belenenses (in 1946) and Boavista (in 2001).

The Lions (Sporting CP) pushed the Eagles (Benfica) all the way to the final stages of the season. The latter however overcame pressure to clinch their 35th Portuguese League title with 88 points, two more than Sporting. Meanwhile, União da Madeira and Académica collected less than 30 points and were relegated to make way for promoted sides Feirense and Chaves.

The 2016-17 season will run from August 12, 2016 until May 21, 2017 covering 34 weekly fixtures.

Did you know? Despite ranking behind bigger leagues from bigger countries such as England and Spain, the Portuguese League has been the launch pad for several active football superstars. Such names include: Renato Sanches, Di Maria, Hulk, Pepe, David Luiz, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Ramires, Falcao, Diego Costa and James Rodriguez to name a few.
