About Portugal - Primeira Liga

The Primeira Liga aka Liga PT is the top level flight of professional football in Portugal. The league is contested by 18 clubs each season but the title race is dominated by the "Big Three": Benfica, Porto, and Sporting. These clubs have won a total of 79 titles between them. Outside of the "Big Three", there has ever only been two other teams that have won the Primeira Liga: Belenenses and Boavista, once each.

The current champions are Benfica who clinched their 34th title in 2015. The Eagles finished with 85 points, three ahead of runners-up FC Porto. Undoubtedly, the biggest news of the transfer window was Jorge Jesus leaving Benfica for city rivals Sporting. Jorge Jesus had been integral in Benfica's resurgence over the past 6 seasons with a 70% win percentage. He also led Benfica to 3 league titles during his era there.

Did you know? Despite ranking behind bigger leagues from bigger countries such as England and Spain, the Portuguese League has been the launch pad for several active football superstars. Such names include: Di Maria, Hulk, Pepe, David Luiz, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Ramires, Falcao, Diego Costa and James Rodriguez to name a few.
