About Portugal - Primeira Liga

The Primeira Liga aka Liga PT is the top level flight of professional football in Portugal. The Liga title is contested by 18 clubs each season. The 2014-15 season will be the 81st edition of the domestic competition. Despite having 18 teams, most of the media and fan attention is centered upon the "Big Three": Benfica, Porto, and Sporting. These clubs have won a total of 78 titles between them. Outside of the "Big Three" there has ever only been two other teams that have won the Primeira Liga: Belenenses and Boavista each once.

Despite the Liga PT being a small league in a small nation (apx. 10 million pop.), it's teams have enjoyed considerable amount of success in Europe with four Europa League finalists and one champions in the last four Europa League editions. You may recognize some famous active player that catapulted their careers in the Liga PT, such names include: DiMaria, Hulk, Pepe, David Luiz, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Ramires, Falcao, Diego Costa and James Rodriguez to name a few.
