A spot at this year's World Cup is up for grabs with Scotland and Ukraine set for an interesting battle on Wednesday night.

The weight of a whole country will be on the shoulders of the Ukrainian football stars when the line up for Wednesday's clash with Scotland. The stakes are higher than usual, with the highly-anticipated encounter at Hampden Park holding extra significance due to the unrest that has emerged as a result of Russia's invasion of the former.

All eyes will be on Oleksandr Petrakov's men as they aim to move within one game of reaching another World Cup finals. The upcoming clash was orignially scheduled for March but was subsequently postponed due to the unrest in the region. The secured the right to feature in Wednesday's encounter after claiming second in Group D in the European qualifiers. They finished behind France, accruing 12 points from eight matches, and finishing just a point ahead of third-place Finland.

Since managing a quarter-final appearance in 2006, the Blagut have failed to qualify for each of the last three editions of the World Cup. All football activities have had to be put on hold due to the ongoing situation in Ukraine, and this will be their first competitive match since beating Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in their final World Cup qualifier back in November 2021. Neverthless, with most of their stars plying their trade in some of Europe's top leagues, the Blue and Yellow should be able to match the Scots in their own backyard.

Steve Clarke's men were impressive in their campaign to securing a play-off spot, picking up 23 points from the 10 matches they played. They managed a record of seven wins, two draws and one defeat, conceding just seven times in Group F. They come into Wednesday's encounter on the back of successive draws in friendlies with Poland and Austria back in March.

A win over Ukraine will be enough put them in the position to play Wales in a play-off final on Sunday. The winner will book a place at the World Cup and will face England, Iran and the USA in the group stage.
