A mouth-watering clash is in store as European heavyweights Real Madrid and Manchester City prepare to do battle in the Champions League quarter-finals on April 9th.

Real Madrid versus Manchester City. The all-time winners of the Champions League against a formidable foe who just so happens to be this season's reigning champions. With the stars on both sides, this game would have been perfectly befitting of the showpiece final taking place at Wembley in just under two months' time. But unfortunately, one of these two powerhouses will suffer an early elimination as the two giants will battle over two legs in the quarter-finals for a coveted spot in the semi-finals and perhaps beyond.

Los Blancos, who will be hosting the first leg of this quarter-finals series, come into this match in excellent form. Carlo Ancelotti's men boast an eight point lead over Barcelona and the rest of the chasing pack in La Liga, and are looking increasingly likely to clinch the domestic crown this season. Although Real Madrid suffered a shocking early exit in this year's Copa del Rey, they have already won one title following their comprehensive defeat of Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana earlier this year.

The Spanish juggernauts will definitely have revenge on their minds when Manchester City come to town on Tuesday. Last season saw the two pitted against each other in the semi-finals of this competition, where, despite drawing the first leg 1-1, Los Blancos were humiliated 4-0 in the second leg to crash out after a 5-1 aggregate defeat.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are involved in an interesting three way battle for the Premier League crown. Pep Guardiola's men come into this game sitting in third spot, behind Arsenal and Liverpool, and come into Tuesday's game unbeaten in their last 25 meetings across all competitions. Impressively, the Cityzens are also unbeaten in their last 21 games in the Champions League, with their last defeat being to none other than Real Madrid (3-1 in 2022).

In addition, City have won their last 10 games overall in this competition, and that sequence all started with their 4-0 drubbing of Real Madrid in 2023 during the semi-finals. In their eight games played so far, City have been in cruise control, winning all six of their group stage matches without much fuss and easily brushing aside Danish side Copenhagen 6-2 on aggregate to book their spot at this juncture.

All in all, fans and neutrals alike are certain to be treated to a great footballing spectacle over the next week as Real Madrid and Manchester City battle to continue their respective journeys in this season's Champions League.

*All info as of April 8, 2024

Real Madrid: Thibaut Courtois and David Alaba are the only definite absentees for the hosts heading into this match. Eder Militao recently made a late appearance during a La Liga match last month, but given that he has been out for much of the season due to an ACL injury, it is not likely that he will be involved in the starting XI here.

Manchester City: Kyle Walker is definitely out due to a hamstring injury, while Nathan Ake is also likely to miss this tie. Josko Gvardiol appeared to have suffered a slight knock during City's win over Crystal Palace at the weekend, but is not likely to be ruled out for this game.
