The Red Devils have abandoned their pursuit of Cucurella and are instead on the brink of signing another out-of-favor Spanish left-back.

Manchester United are already dealing with an injury crisis, with Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw, and Mason Mount being ruled out for a number of weeks. As a result, the Red Devils turned to the transfer window to rectify one issue: the left-back dilemma.

With both Shaw and Malacia injured, Erik ten Hag was forced to use Diogo Dalot in an unnatural position but is seeking reinforcement in that department.

The Red Devils turned to Chelsea player Marc Cucurella following his disappointing debut season at Stamford Bridge and wanted to bring the player to Old Trafford on a season-long loan.

However, the Spaniard's appearance for Chelsea in the Carabao Cup win over Wimbledon on Wednesday complicated matters. First of all, this made him cup-tied and would have prevented him from appearing for the reigning champions in this competition.

Furthermore, if the Red Devils decided to send him back in January, he would not have been eligible to leave on loan for a third club. And finally, Chelsea wanted a £7M (roughly $9M) loan fee for the 25-year-old.

As a result of all of this, Manchester United have pulled the plug on this deal and have turned to another Premier League left-back. That player is Sergio Reguilon, the Tottenham man who is no longer in their plans.

The Spaniard spent last season on loan to Atletico Madrid and while he has returned to North London, he is not favored by Ange Postecoglou and has not featured for the club this season.

And according to the Athletic, Reguilon has thus been given permission to negotiate with Manchester United and undergo a medical. This means it is a matter of time before the Red Devils wrap up this deal.

However, the player is unlikely to join in time to feature for the club's upcoming clash with Arsenal. Rashford and Co. will travel to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday for a highly-anticipated clash live on Peacock, NBC, and Telemundo.
