The Reds are sweating over the fitness of one of their key players ahead of the upcoming European cup match-up.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has dropped a major hint over Darwin Nunez potentially absence in their midweek Champions League encounter with Real Madrid. The Uruguayan striker has given the Reds boss much to think about after suffering an injury in Saturday evening's win over Newcastle United.

After a tough start to life in the Premier League, Nunez is gradually finding his feet and was on the scoresheet alongside Cody Gakpo as Liverpool got the better of Newcastle United at the Saint James' Park. However, the former Benfica striker did not last the full duration of the game, and was replaced by Roberto Firmino after injuring his shoulder inside the 59th minute.

Following the conclusion of the game, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was asked to provide an update on Nunez's fitness. However, with the Champions League Round of 16 match-up with Real Madrid just around the corner, the German coach's response did not bode well as far as his side's chances against the defending champions.

"The bad news is that Darwin has something wrong with his shoulder. That's why I took him off", Jurgen Klopp said.

"I don't know at the moment if he will play against Madrid. We need a further evaluation. We only know it hurts, but we hope it's just that."

Meanwhile, the return of Diogo Jota was received well by fans of Liverpool ahead of the mid-week's showdown. The Portuguese striker who has been on the treatment table for a prolonged period marked his return to the side by replacing Cody Gakpo in the 59th minute and delivered an impressive cameo at the Saint James' Park.
