About Qatar in FIFA World Cup history

This will be the very first appearance by Qatar in the FIFA World Cup. From the 1978 edition to the 2018 tournament in Russia, the Gulf nation have tried but failed to qualify for this prestigious competition. Given that they are the hosts, Al Annabi were guaranteed to make their debut in 2022 as they look to become the first Middle Eastern side to make it into the knockout stage since Saudi Arabia in 1994.

Who is Qatar's coach for the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

Félix Sánchez is the man currently in charge of the Qatar national team. The Spanish tactician was a Barcelona youth coach before moving to the Middle East in 2006. He first joined the Aspire Academy, a sports academy started with the sole goal of scouting and helping Qatari athletes, before taking over the country's U19 side in 2013.

Four years later, Sánchez moved on to the country's U23 side and enjoyed a three-year spell in that role before eventually becoming Al Annabi's head coach in 2017. After only two years in charge, he led them to their very first AFC Asian Cup title, beating Japan in the final to win the 2019 tournament. In 2021, the Spaniard led the FIFA World Cup hosts to the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals after being invited to the competition.

Qatar's expectations ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Given that the hosts have never qualified for this competition before, there is a huge gap between the expectations and the country's hopes. Not many will bet on Qatar qualifying for the round of 16, but with the home advantage, the Maroon will be hopeful of making it past the group stage. Sánchez's side have been grouped alongside the Netherlands, meaning the Oranje are favorites to win the group, leaving only one spot for the host nation and their two other rivals. However, Qatar showed in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup that they are a capable side and thus should not be underestimated.

Qatar: Key players for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Three players will be crucial for the host nation, the first being the experienced attacker Hassan Al-Haydos. Not only is he the Qatar national team captain, but he is also one of their most versatile weapons, being able to play in the midfield and on the right wing. The Al Sadd ace was crucial to his nation's AFC Asian Cup success and if Al Annabi are going to make the round of 16, they will need their skipper to step up.

In attack, Akram Afif could offer Sánchez's side the magic they need to break down their rivals. The Al Sadd sensation, who can play on the left and right, is both a goalscoring threat and a reliable playmaker who possesses lovely technical skills. He was named the Asian Footballer of the Year in 2019, proving that he is one of the most talented players in his continent.

And finally, we have Almoez Ali, the man who will lead the line for Qatar. The 25-year-old has never failed to impress for his county in major tournaments, scoring nine goals during their successful 2019 AFC Asian Cup run and finishing the tournament as the top scorer. Additionally, he scored a commendable four goals during their aforementioned appearance in the 2021 Gold Cup and was the top scorer in that competition as well. Despite his age, Almoez is already the third-highest all-time goal scorer for his country, and given his track record, Ali will only add to this tally come the latest FIFA World Cup.
