Messi sets records as Barca lift Copa Del Rey

Messi lands new records as Barca hit Athletic Club for four to clinch Copa Del Rey title

April 17, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Barcelona superstar entered the history books for his contributions in Saturday night's final.

Lionel Messi has landed a few records after inspiring Barcelona to another Copa Del Rey title win in Saturday's final encounter with Athletic Club. The 33-year-old Argentine hit the target twice as his side scored five second half goals to clinch the title.

Following a keenly contested first half, Barcelona came out with guns blazing and hit their Basque opponents for five to secure their 31st title. Frenkie De Jong assisted Antoine Griezmann to draw first blood for the Blaugrana before the Dutchman headed home his side's second three minutes later.

The former Ajax man was basically the fulcrum in attack for Ronald Koeman's charges as he will subsequently assist Lionel Messi for what will be a record-breaking goal to take Barca's advantage to three. After the goal in the 68th minute, the Argentine scored another in the 72nd minute to seal the deal for the most-successful club in the competition's history although Griezmann could have gotten a fifth but had his effort rule for offside by VAR.

In effect, Lionel Messi entered the Copa Del Rey's record books by overcoming Telmo Zarra's feat as the most-prolific player in the finals of competition. So far the Barcelona superstar has scored 10 goals in his 10 final appearances. In addition, the Argentine's contribution in the night saw him become the only football player in history to score 30 or more club goals for 13 consecutive seasons. He surpassed the feats of Gerd Müller and Fernando Peyroteo who had scored 30+ goals in  their respective careers for 12 consecutive seasons.

Saturday's Copa Del Rey title win was Barcelona's first since the 2018-2019 season. The feat also saw Lionel Messi win the 35th trophy of his career, breaking Ryan Giggs' record of most titles for a single club.
