Chelsea looking for German-speaking coach

Chelsea searching for Lampard's replacement in the wake of 2-0 Leicester defeat

January 20, 2021 By Ali M.
The Blues are said to be on the hunt for a German-speaking coach, with three managers being identified as likely targets.

According to the Athletic, Chelsea are ready to launch a search for Frank Lampard's replacement, with the English coach suffering yet another disappointing result in the English Premier League on Tuesday. The publication adds that the London giants are on the lookout for "German-speaking coaches" to succeed the iconic Englishman.

Tuesday saw the Blues return to action in the league, visiting Leicester in need of a win. However, it was the same old toothless Chelsea performance, with Super Frank's expensively-assembled squad failing to score past Brendan Rodgers' side, instead losing 2-0 thanks to goals from Ndidi and Maddison.

Timo Werner, one of two marque summer signings, started on the bench due to his poor form and was only introduced in the 68th minute, the same time Kai Havertz, Lampard's other struggling mega-money acquisition, was taken off. The manager's inability to get the best out of the two former Bundesliga sensations is a huge factor, with the hierarchy firmly in the belief that a German-speaking tactician could unlock their true potential.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is being looked at, having enjoyed tremendous spells at St. Mary's Stadium and at RB Leipzig, but he isn't the only candidate. Ralf Ragnick and Julian Naglesmann have their fair share of admirers among the Chelsea board, but whether the EPL giants can lure them to London remains uncertain.

Another reason why the Blues are interested in a coach whose roots stem from the Bundesliga is due to the German top-flight's familiarity with a structure that includes a director of football. Having endured horrible clashes with the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, the club do not want a rebellious manager who bears the risk of clashing with the higher-ups.
