Real Madrid eyeing two Zizou successors

Real Madrid eyeing two possible Zidane successors as doubts grow ahead of El Clasico

October 22, 2020 By Ali M.
This comes after Los Blancos suffered back-to-back home defeats, first in La Liga then in the Champions Leaague.

Winning 11 trophies in just a few years in charge is enough to earn most managers the support they need, but Zinedine Zidane, this might not be the case. Previous success almost never matters at the Bernabeu. After losing back-to-back games, the Blancos board are said to be growing doubtful of the Frenchman's reign.

And according to AS, the club are eyeing two candidates should the axe come down on the 48-year-old tactician. They are Raúl and Mauricio Pochettino, two named who have been linked with the Spanish giants several times in recent years. It should be stressed that Zidane's job is not on the line heading into Saturday's El Clasico as he still boasts a vote of confidence from Florentino Perez. However, the club are exploring their options.

The first of the two upsets came in their 1-0 loss at home to Cadiz in La Liga. That disappointment was followed by another embarrassing result, this time in Europe, losing 3-2 to Shakhtar Donetsk at the Bernabeu in the Champions League. However, the concerns extend past these two defeats as the Spanish champions are yet to impress this season.

Victory at the Camp Nou this weekend will make amends but the club have lined up their options should they pull the trigger on Zizou. Of the two, Perez is set to favor Raúl. The club legend is the Castilla head coach and would (presumably) welcome the promotion, having led the Under-19s to the UEFA Youth League title.

One issue is experience, which the Spaniard lacks. Pochetttino would be an upgrade in this department, having proven his credentials at Tottenham. The Argentine has been approached by Real Madrid several times before, with the former Espanyol and Southampton man publicly admitting his desire to manage Real Madrid.
