Ajax chief slams UEFA and Dutch FA

Ajax chief slams UEFA and Dutch FA over coronavirus response; compares both to Donald Trump

April 1, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The former Netherlands international did not hold back with his criticism of the two football governing bodies.

Ajax technical director Marc Overmars has expressed fury over UEFA and the Dutch FA's plans to conclude the 2019/2020 league season. The former Dutch footballer compared the two bodies to the President of the United States Donald Trump as a result of their apparent naivety to understand the full consequence of the coronavirus pandemic.

Overmars' declaration came after the Dutch football association (KNVB) released a statement saying it would follow UEFA's direction to attempt to complete the suspended league season by August 3. The football governing body was part of 55 UEFA members who partook in Wednesday's meeting to deliberate on the next course of action for football in Europe.

As part of the measures proposed, the KNVB could look at finishing the 2019/2020 Eredivisie season by resuming the suspended campaign in mid-June. Nevertheless, the arrangement does not sit right with Ajax technical director Marc Overmars. Speaking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the former Arsenal midfielder called for the season to be voided and declared his frustration at the major stakeholders for the solutions being proposed.

"The league is dead, life is more important," Overmars said.

"Why would it be about money and not people's well-being at this time? I had hoped that the KNVB would take an independent decision, but they are now hiding behind UEFA.

"I have a lot of difficulties understanding that [decision]. We in the Netherlands are not as dependent on television rights incomes as the leagues in Spain, England, Italy, and Germany are.

"I think that they had been put under big pressure by Uefa to continue playing at whatever cost.

"I'm comparing the KNVB and UEFA with the sentiments of American president Donald Trump a week ago when he thought the economy was more important than the coronavirus.

"Hallo! There are more than 100 people dying daily in the Netherlands because of the coronavirus," he concluded.

Prior to the hiatus, Overmars' Ajax side led the Eredivisie on goal difference. The Amsterdam outfit is tied with AZ Alkmaar after 25 matches, both boast 56 points apiece.
