Coach Leonardo has interestingly downplayed the importance of Saturday’s AC Milan vs Inter derby whereas everyone around him portrays it as the Scudetto’s decider. Live Soccer TV tackles this topic.
It is true that nothing is over until it is over and that points get counted at the end of the road in football. However, mathematical possibilities don’t always defeat realism. If Inter fall 5 points behind AC Milan on Saturday with a defeat, it won’t mathematically rule out Leonardo’s team as potential title winners since there will then be 7 more matches to go.

However, football fans will expect AC Milan to keep matters in their own hands at the disadvantage of the then-wounded Nerazzurri. So isn’t it normal to view this weekend’s derby as the ultimate title decider?

For AC Milan legend Shevchenko, “the match will be decisive in regards to the Scudetto. Both sides will be looking to win the derby,” and “Milan can do it.” Obviously, Shevchenko’s view of Saturday’s Derby della Madonnina as the championship’s decider is being shared with the majority of football’s public.

Either way, Internazionale’s Leonardo insists that it won’t mean much. “The derby will not be crucial because after the game, there will be another seven round of matches to play,” he explains as ESPN Soccernet reported.

Indeed, AC Milan will have to face Fiorentina, then Sampdoria then AS Roma and also Udinese in their upcoming matches. And are the Rossoneri guaranteed to win them all?

The answer to this question is reasonably, ‘no’. Fact: AC Milan lost 7 points out of the possible 12 against these 4 teams in the first part of the Serie A this season.

November 20, 2010: AC Milan 1-0 Fiorentina
November 27, 2010: Sampdoria 1-1 AC Milan
December 18, 2010: AC Milan 0-1 Roma
January 9, 2010: AC Milan 4-4 Udinese

Supposing this happens again, then Inter will only need to get things right at their end to claim the 2010/2011 Italian Serie A title. The good sign for Inter is that they are enjoying a good run, having lost only once since the beginning of February.

So the momentum is there, but having said that, one may ask why Inter would concede losing it against the Rossoneri this weekend only to take it back after. What is actually the real reason behind Coach Leonardo's idea of downplaying the importance of the AC Milan vs Internazionale derby?
