Mexico's team profile for the CONCACAF Gold Cup

Mexico team profile: key players, roster, coach for 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup

May 29, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
Even without many key players, Mexico is one of the top contenders to win the Gold Cup. Get to know them with this team profile.

What is Mexico's record in the CONCACAF Gold Cup?

Mexico has played in each and every one of the 14 CONCACAF Gold Cup editions to this date. El Tri can brag about being the most winning team in this tournament's history, with seven titles to their name. Mexico's last win in CONCACAF's tournament took place in 2015, when they claimed the title by beating Jamaica with a 3-1 score. The 2017 edition of this tournament was not as successful for them, since the Reggae Boyz knocked them out in the semi-finals thanks to a shocking 2-1 win.

What is Mexico's roster for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup?

*This squad will be updated before the beginning of the tournament.

"Coach Gerardo Martino unveiled the preliminary squad for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup."

Who are Mexico's key players for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup?

Guillermo Ochoa – Standard Liege's shot-stopper has made a name for himself in the international arena with his performances in the two most recent World Cups. This time around, Ochoa will have to prove his skills as co-captain. Ochoa's career has blossomed while in Belgium, and a good tournament here could see him land a spot in a better European team, now that his contract is set to run out with the Belgian side.

El arquero de los dos pasados Mundiales es, a falta de algunos otros referentes, el abocado a tomar el mando como líder del equipo. Su experiencia y liderazgo lo respaldan, además de su buen desempeño en la liga de Bélgica los últimos dos años.

Edson Álvarez – The Club América midfielder is one of the top prospects coach Martino will have around this summer. Álvarez is a reliable center back and an impressive holding midfielder, which will come in handy if El Tri needs to change tactics while playing a tough game. Álvarez has been approached by Ajax and PSV scouts, and a good tournament could be just what he needs to play in Europe.

Raúl Jiménez – Mexico's most in-form striker will have a chance to prove himself as a worthy successor for Javier "Chicharito" Hernández. A heated debate has been going on for quite a while in Mexico, since some believe that the Little Pea should not lose his spot as Mexico's No.9, but Jiménez's massive season as Wolves' top scorer may be just what he needs to claim the job for the next few years to come.

Who is Mexico's coach?

Gerardo "Tata" Martino – The Argentine tactician took over as boss in January 2019, and his two games as El Tri's boss ended in a win. His previous experience as Paraguay and Argentina's coach makes fans believe in their chances, and Martino will try to prove his worth by giving Mexico a true style of play, something that the North American team lacked while Juan Carlos Osorio called the shots as El Tri's manager.
