Chelsea looking to kick off their return to Europe on right footing
With Atletico Madrid also in this group, as well as Roma, Chelsea obviously will be looking for maximum points against Qarabag, who are by far the weakest side in the quartet. Many pundits feel that it's going to be a battle between the Blues and Los Rojiblancos for top spot, whilst the Giallorossi, who finished second in Serie A last season will want to try to have a say in that race as well. Given that Antonio Conte's side open their group stage campaign at home and face a much tougher test against Atleti in a few weeks' time in Madrid, the Italian tactician will naturally want to secure all three points ahead of that match - especially as Atletico Madrid and Roma will be locking horns in the Eternal City tomorrow.
Chelsea will be coming into this game having beaten Leicester 2-1, and in terms of personnel, only Danny Drinkwater, who is struggling with a calf injury, is a definite absentee for this match. Eden Hazard made his return from injury during the Blues' victory, coming on as a late sub for Cesc Fabregas, whilst new signing Davide Zappacosta could be handed his full debut in this fixture. The ex-Torino man also got some minutes during last weekend's game as a sub for Victor Moses, whilst Gary Cahill, who has had to miss out on the team's last few matches due to a ban could make his return to the fold as his suspension does not apply to European fixtures.
As for Chelesa's upcoming opponents, they lost 2-1 to FC Copenhagen in the second leg of their two-part play-off, but thanks to a 1-0 win in the first leg, secured their spot in the group stages thanks to winning on away goals. It goes without saying that they are a largely unknown quantity in this competition, but Conte will certainly be familiar with some of their players due to his time with the Italian national team as the Azzurri took on Azerbaijan a few years back during qualifiers for the EURO 2016 tournament.
