Real Madrid will host Auxerre in the Champions League’s 6th match-day. According to Sami Khedira, Los Blancos need to be strong in defense to win tonight.
Real Madrid allowed 5 goals against Barcelona the other time only for their defenders to admit that Los Blancos’ impressive defensive record overall this season could be tempted at any given time. In the Champions League, Real Madrid have conceded only twice so far whereas they’ve been strong at the other end of the pitch – scoring 11 goals in 5 matches.

However, midfielder Sami Khedira isn’t flattered by these numbers as he looks forward to helping Real Madrid maintain their momentum ahead of the Champions League’s last group stages match-day. Auxerre will visit the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night, and the Dutch wants his team to concentrate at the back.

“We know Auxerre very well following the first game we played against them,” Khedira stated in an interview with Real Madrid’s sponsor Bwin.

“They are strong in defense. They are very dangerous on the counterattack too. We’ve got to avoid falling in their trap. I think they have 2 or 3 players who are fast and who have a lot of quality.

“Tactically, Auxerre are good. We need to concentrate hard and attend well to our defensive duties. We’ll also have to watch out and avoid making too many fouls close to our box. This will allow us to prevent danger coming from mid-distance aerial plays.”

Khedira continued:

“Auxerre have scored many goals away from home – both in Europe and domestically. We need to avoid giving them such chances.”

Auxerre went down 1-0 at the Abbé-Deschamps Stadium back in September. The French side were only minutes away from securing a vital point at home to Real Madrid but Angel Di Maria had other ideas for the Spanish giants. This time, Auxerre will hope to do better at the Santiago Bernabeu as they have a mathematical chance of beating 3rd placed Ajax to qualify for the Champions League.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, have nothing to play for as they’ve secured Group G’s top spot. However, maintaining the momentum is a must for the 9-time European champions who are desperate to break their Last 16 curse in the Champions League.
