The Argentinian coach was rumored to be negotiating a contract with Premier League champions Manchester City in order to substitute Manuel Pellegrini.

After weeks of negotiations, it seems that finally Diego Simeone will sign his contract extension with Atletico Madrid, dismissing every rumor that placed him coaching in the Premier League next season. According to sources, Simeone will end up making up to six million euros per season, with his commitment with Atletico ending in 2019.

Simeone's requests to Atletico's chairman Enrique Cerezo involved complete control of the team's signings, meaning he had to approve every sale and every new footballer added to his team. This was a crucial point during negotiations, since the Argentinian manager wants a team that can fight for every tournament they play, while having a chance to improve on a year-to-year basis.

"El Cholo" led Atletico to their first La Liga title in 18 years

With the upcoming deal, Simeone will become one of the highest-paid managers in European football, being Pep Guardiola the best-paid coach( €12 million), followed by Jose Mourinho ( €10.2 million), Arsene Wenger ( €8.2 million), Carlo Ancelotti ( € 7.5 million) and Manuel Pellegrini ( €6.6 million).

Simeone's resume with Atletico Madrid includes the following trophies:

  • UEFA Europa League (2012)
  • UEFA SuperCup (2012)
  • Copa del Rey (2013)
  • La Liga (2013-2014)
  • Spanish SuperCup (2014)

Also, the former midfielder led Los Colchoneros to their first UEFA Champions League final in 40 years, which they lost against Real Madrid.
