If both Iker Casillas and Jerzy Dudek become unavailable for Real Madrid between the sticks, then either Sergio Ramos or Sami Khedira will assume the goalkeeping role for Los Blancos – that’s according to Coach Jose Mourinho.

Real Madrid Coach Jose Mourinho pictured during training. The Real Madrid manager talked about players and position at a press conference as he explained:

“We know already who will be goalkeeper if we lose the two. It will be Sergio Ramos or Khedira. We train and we’ve eventually come to these conclusions.

“It has happened twice already [to lose both goalkeepers], and it can happen again. Now every week, Khedira and Sergio Ramos will train in goal, just in case.”

Jose Mourinho continued:

“Arbeloa isn’t a central defender. If we’re in trouble, he can play in that position. [Against Hercules], I tried Gago in defense.

“Cristiano is not a centre forward. He loses many characteristics when he plays in that position.

"But, he could give us a solution in that position if needed, just as Ramos and Khedira could in goal should we lose two goalkeepers.”

So Real Madrid supporters should expect their team to play different formations and their players to switch positions when needed. They will however hope that confusion don’t hit their plans during matches as it will surely be a disaster to have Sergio Ramos or Sami Khedira making saves despite being without goalkeeper gloves. Such a thing might create another controversy similar to Luis Suarez’s unpopular “Hand of the Devil”.

Real Madrid will play against Peñarol tonight in the 32nd edition of the Trofeo Santiago Bernabeu. Both teams last met 50 years ago with Los Blancos running away as victors. Real Madrid vs Peñarol will mark the Spanish giants’ last preseason match before they open their competitive campaign with a La Liga encounter against Real Mallorca.
