About Serie A2 Futsal
Serie A2 Futsal History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
Serie A2 is Italy’s third-division futsal (five-a-side) league, founded in 1998 and operated by the Divisione Calcio a 5, an arm of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). It served as the country’s second-tier futsal division until 2023, when Serie A2 Élite was established, thus demoting Serie A2 to the third tier.
The league follows an Autumn-Spring schedule, typically starting in October, though this can vary. Over 40 teams, ranging from professional to amateur futsal clubs, participate in Serie A2, with the number of teams fluctuating over the years.
During the regular season, teams are divided into groups, usually four, with varying numbers of teams per group based on participation. The league employs a double round-robin format, meaning each team faces every other team in its group twice.
After the regular Serie A2 futsal season concludes, the playoffs determine which teams achieve promotion to Serie A2 Élite and which are relegated to Serie B, Italy’s fourth-division futsal championship. Likewise, the number of teams that go up and down each season has not been consistent.
Verona became the first team in Serie A2 history to win the championship twice, achieving this in the 1998-99 and 2011-12 seasons.
