About FIFA U-17 World Cup
FIFA U-17 World Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The FIFA U-17 World Cup is a major world tournament organized by FIFA for players of the age of 17 or under. Inspired by the Lion City Cup, this competition was founded in 1985 as an under-16 event before eventually increasing the age category by a year in 1991.
The first official edition of this tournament was held in China. Nigeria won that competition by beating Germany in the title clash. Since then, FIFA decided to stage the tournament every two years.
Unlike the senior FIFA World Cup, the U-17 World Cup participants are not determined through a dedicated qualifying tournament. Instead, representatives from AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC, and UEFA earn their tickets through their performances in their respective U-17 or U-16 continental competitions, with the highest-placing teams making this biennial FIFA event.
A total of 24 nations participate in this cup. The contestants are split into six groups of four. The top two teams from each group secure progression to the round of 16 and are joined by the four best third-placed sides. The last 16, the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final are all one-off matches. Once the tournament wraps up and the champions are crowned, FIFA hands out an additional four awards: the Golden Ball, the Golden Boot, the Golden Glove, and the FIFA Fair Play Award.
