About Coupe de France

The Coupe Charles Simon, commonly referred to as Coupe de France, is the most important cup competition run by the French Football Federation. The cup’s name pays tribute to Charles Simon, a French sportsman who died serving his country in World War I.

This competition is open to all amateur and professional football clubs in France, including those coming from their overseas departments and territories. This year, the competition will celebrate its 103rd edition, with over 8,000 teams having a chance to play in this tournament.

This tournament represents quite a challenge for Ligue 1 teams, as many find it difficult to travel to face their lower-tier rivals, according to the rules established by the French Football Federation. That difficulty has seen two amateur teams reaching the final in the 21st century.

The tournament consists of 14 rounds, with top-tier teams entering the competition in the Round of 32. All games are played on a single-game format, with the winner being determined by extra time or penalties if necessary. The competition’s final is played at Stade de France.

The 2018-19 campaign saw Stade Rennais winning their 3rd title in history after beating PSG in the title match. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, and Rennes went on to defeat Les Parisiens with a 6-5 score in the penalty shootout. This loss marked the end of PSG’s four-year winning streak in this competition.

The preliminary rounds of the 2019-20 Coupe de France will start on August 13, 2019. The last preliminary games are expected to be played on November 17, 2019. The final stages of the tournament will be determined once the names of the teams involved in the competition are revealed.

Did you know? Paris Saint-Germain is the most winning team in the Coupe de France, with 12 titles to their name. Nevertheless, it is Olympique Marseille who has played more final matches, with 19. Unfortunately for Les Olympiens, their last Coupe title came in 1989, and they have only been able to play the title match in three more occasions after their last title.
