About Coupe de France
The Coupe Charles Simon, commonly referred to as Coupe de France, is the most important cup competition run by the French Football Federation. The cup’s name pays tribute to Charles Simon, a French sportsman who died serving his country in World War I.
This competition is open to all amateur and professional football clubs in France, including those coming from their overseas departments and territories. More than 8,000 teams have the chance to play in this tournament.
This tournament represents quite a challenge for Ligue 1 teams, as many find it difficult to travel to face their lower-tier rivals, according to the rules established by the French Football Federation. That difficulty has seen two amateur teams reaching the final in the 21st century.
The tournament consists of 14 rounds, with top-tier teams entering the competition in the Round of 32. All games are played in a single-game format, with the winner being determined by extra time or penalties if necessary. The competition’s final is played at Stade de France.
The winner is presented with the trophy and also qualifies for the subsequent season’s UEFA Europa League. In case the champions have already qualified for the UEFA Champions League by finishing in the top half of the league, their UEFA Europa League spot goes to the next highest placed finisher in the league table. Teams that are from overseas are also eligible for UEFA qualification.Newsletter Signup »
