About Campeonato Goiano 1
Campeonato Goiano 1 History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Campeonato Goiano 1 is the top-flight league of Goiás, the Brazilian state located in the Center-West region of the South American country. This competition, which is exclusive to clubs from that region, was founded in 1944, with Atlético Goianiense winning the inaugural title after beating Goiânia to the trophy.
A total of 12 teams contest the competition. However, the format of the Campeonato Goiano 1 has undergone changes throughout the years. In some instances, the 12 participants were split into two groups of six in the first round while in other seasons, the teams were placed into one group altogether. Additionally, the league has observed an intergroup double round-robin format (teams facing clubs from the other group twice in the first round), an intragroup double round-robin format (teams facing clubs from within their same group twice in the first round), and a single round-robin format (teams facing each other only once in the first round).
The top eight performers (or the top four performers from each group when the first round consisted of two groups) progress to the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, the two worst performers in the group stage get relegated to the Divisão de Acesso, the region’s second-division league.
The quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final follow the group stage, with all three rounds being single-leg ties. The champions earn qualification to the Copa do Brasil and Copa Verde. The second-placed and third-placed teams, based on points accumulated throughout the entire Campeonato Goiano 1 season, also earn tickets to the Copa do Brasil.
