Copa de la Superliga Argentina History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Copa de la Liga Profesional is an official Argentine cup competition that was founded in 2020. Run by the Liga Profesional de Fútbol, which is linked to the Argentine Football Association (AFA), this tournament replaced the Superliga Argentina, which was abandoned that same year.

The inaugural season of the Copa de la Liga Profesional was contested by the 24 teams in the 2019-20 Argentine Primera División, the country’s top-flight league. The participants were split into six groups of four teams and played a double round-robin format. The top two teams from each group moved on to a single round-robin tournament to decide the champion.

The winner of this tournament earns qualification to the Copa Libertadores, CONMEBOL’s prestigious continental club competition. Given that Argentina’s biggest clubs compete in the Copa de la Liga Profesional, including South American powerhouses Boca Juniors, who won two of the first three tournaments, well-known broadcasters picked up this tournament’s TV rights. This includes ESPN Premium, ESPN, TNT Sports, and TyC Sports.
