About Copa Argentina
Copa Argentina History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Copa Argentina is a club competition organized by the Argentine Football Association. It is played by professional teams from all categories.
The first edition of the Argentine Cup was held back in 1969, and after just two editions, the competition was brought to a halt that lasted 41 years. It was not until 2011 when the tournament was revived with a new format and with teams from all of Argentina’s football system being allowed to play in it. Over 180 teams from the South American country have played this competition.
To make things easier for all teams involved, the pool is divided in two brackets of 32 teams each, who will play KO matches until a champion is crowned. Fixtures in this competition tend to change due to the massive number of tournaments Argentine clubs tend to play in. Eventually, the winner of the tournament is handed out a spot in the Copa Libertadores.
The competition has been covered all over the world thanks to previous TV deals by Fox Sports and TyC Sports, who have also made available their broadcasts to streaming services such as Fanatiz.
Boca Juniors will forever hold the record as the only Argentine team in history to win a Copa Argentina title during its first run and after its relaunch.
