About Copa MX

The Copa MX is an annual club competition played by Liga MX and Ascenso MX sides. There have been 54 editions of this tournament, despite the 12-year-hiatus the tournament lived from 1997 to 2012.

The number of teams involved in this competition is closely determined by each club’s involvement in international competitions. Ascenso MX teams qualify to this tournament based on their individual performance. Twelve Ascenso MX teams were included in the 2019-20 tournament along with 15 Liga MX sides. Four teams from the Mexican top-flight -América, Cruz Azul, Tigres and León- were left out so they could fight for the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League title.

The teams included in the competition are drawn into nine groups. The winner of each group automatically earns a spot in the KO Stage, while seven out of the nine group runners-up also qualify to that stage of the competition.

The KO stage begins with the Round of 16, which will be played on a two-leg format. The closing game of each tie will see the top-seeded club hosting the game. The same format will be followed until the final clash.

This competition changed the format in which Cup games were held since 2012. Up until the 2018-19 campaign, there were two cup champions per season. KO stage games were a one-leg tie, and the final followed the same format. Things were changed to give teams a chance to plan their seasons without many games that felt unnecessary.

The most recent Copa MX edition was called Clausura 2019 Cup, and Club América won it by beating FC Juárez with a 1-0 score.

The 2019-20 Copa MX edition will begin on July 30, 2019. The Group Stage is set to end on November 6. While the dates for the KO stage are yet to be revealed, the final match is scheduled to be played on April 14 or 15, depending on the teams that get to the title clash.

The dates will be determined during the earlier days of January, since Liga MX officers don’t want the tournament’s final to be overlapped with the playoff stage in the Mexican top-flight.

Did you know? With their Clausura 2019 win, América became the most winning team in Copa MX history, breaking the tie they had with León and Puebla. Los azulcremas are now the top-winning team in all tournaments that are organized by the Mexican Football Federation.
