About
Play Sports history, coverage, features
Play Sports is a package of television channels partly owned and operated by the Belgian cable distributor Telenet. It was launched in 2005 as Prime Sport, but it would later be rebranded to Sporting Telenet. The service would go through another rebranding in 2012 when Play Sports was elected by its parent company.
Over the years, Play Sports has turned into a household name for sports coverage in Belgium, thanks to the availability of bundles in most pay-tv companies. Each package comes with different channels, which will be in charge of covering different disciplines. Some of the sports covered by this platform have included football, basketball, golf, motorsport, cyclocross, tennis, hockey, and more.
Speaking about football, Play Sports has covered leagues such as the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, the MLS, the English Premier League, the Eredivisie, the German Bundesliga, the Spanish Primera División, the Italian Serie A, and domestic tournaments such as the Spanish Copa del Rey. Added to that, games for the UEFA Europa League have also been available on this service. Notice that not all leagues are available on all subscription bundles and pay-tv companies.
Play Sports started airing its content in Standard Definition, but the company managed to transition its entire offer of channels to High-Definition technology in the 2016-17 season. This saw Play Sports becoming the first sports package to make such a transition in Belgium.
