About CONCACAF Nations League

The CONCACAF Nations League is a recently created tournament that brings together all the national teams affiliated to that confederation. This league’s goal is to eliminate friendly games in order to establish a system to see lower-ranked teams having a better chance to play in the confederation’s top competition, the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

All 41 CONCACAF National Teams were drawn into three different leagues, labeled League A, League B and League C. Each league has four different groups, and the rewards for winning each group are quite different, depending on the league.

The winner of each group in League A gets to play the Final Four Stage. Added to that, they earn a spot in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Those teams that end as group runners-up also qualify to the group stage of the qualify to the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifiers, while those teams that end in last place of each group in League A enter the second round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup Qualifiers, but they are relegated to League B.

Group winners in League B earn a spot in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup and are promoted to League A. Teams that end as group runners-up make it to the first round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup Qualifiers, while the last-placed teams in each group of this league are relegated to League C.

Those teams who win their group in League C will enter the first round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup Qualifiers and will also be promoted to League B. This league will not have any “punishment” for last-placed teams, since this is the lower-tier category in the competition.

Once all group stage games are played, eight teams will battle for the remaining spots to play the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The winners of each playoff will enter the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Final Four stage will be played at one venue, yet to be determined. All games will be played during the FIFA International break for the 2019-20 season.
