About CONCACAF Nations League
CONCACAF Nations League History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Concacaf Nations League is a recently created tournament that brings together all the national teams affiliated to that confederation. This league’s goal is to eliminate friendly games to establish a system to see lower-ranked teams having a better chance to play in the confederation’s top competition, the Concacaf Gold Cup.
All 41 CONCACAF National Teams were drawn into three different leagues, labeled League A, League B and League C. Each league has a different format, mainly due to the number of teams involved in each lot.
League A is played by twelve teams, which are divided in two groups of six. Contrary to most leagues and tournaments, this league works under a Swiss-style format, which means that teams will not be forced to play against all their rivals in this group. Once they finish their four games, the winner and the runners-up of each group in League A get to play the Final Round, which gives direct access to the 2024 Copa America and also qualify to play the closest Concacaf Gold Cup. The two worst teams in each group will face relegation to League B.
League B is played by 16 teams who are drawn into four groups of four. Round-robin format prevails in this league, with the winner of each lot earning promotion for the next edition of the Nations League. Meanwhile, the lowest-ranked teams of each group are relegated to League C.
Last, but not least, League C is played by three groups of three teams, who also play home and away fixtures to determine the three teams (one per group) that are promoted to League B. An additional promotion is determined between the group runners-up, where the team with the better record securing the final spot in League B. Since this is the final tier in the Concacaf Nations League, there is no relegation.
The final round in League A is the most interesting portion of the competition, with the top teams in the region fighting for the title and for the Copa America spots from the first KO round forward. The winners of each quarter final tie make it to the Copa America, while the four losers enter a play-in to determine the two teams that will also play the prestigious tournament from South America. As for the semifinalists, they are ranked once again based on their performances from the previous stage to know their rivals. The semifinals, third place game, and the title match are played at the same venue.
