AT&T SportsNet Southwest History, Coverage, Features
AT&T SportsNet Southwest is an English-language regional sports channel in the United States. Its broadcast areas include the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, where it is offered by many cable TV providers. It is also available in parts of New Mexico. Viewers in other states may access AT&T SportsNet Southwest via satellite through DirecTV.
The network – now owned by AT WarnerMedia News & Sports – was launched in 2012 as Comcast SportsNet Houston (CSN), and it initially operated as a member of the Comcast Sports regional sports networks group. In 2014, it got rebranded as Root Sports Southwest, but major structural changes in its ownership saw it switch to the AT&T SportsNet brand in 2017.
Coverage of live games on AT&T SportsNet Southwest has mainly been centered on the NBA’s Houston Rockets and MLB’s Houston Astros, over the years. Soccer fans will also recall that in 2013, Major League Soccer (MLS) club Houston Dynamo agreed a multiyear deal to have their matches aired live in HD on the network – then known as CSN Houston.
This brought Dynamo fans dozens of live MLS games on their TV screens every season, along with exclusive pregame and postgame shows, magazine shows, documentaries and more. The deal also involved local station KPRC Local 2. The list of Houston Dynamo matches that were telecast excluded MLS games that were aired by national broadcasters like ESPN and Univision.
To get around scheduling conflicts – in times when multiple events are taking place at the same time, making it impossible for the main feed to cover all of them simultaneously – the channel maintains an overflow feed called AT&T SportsNet Southwest Plus. The latter comes in high definition as well and is available on DirecTV channel 674-1.
Cable and satellite TV subscribers who have the network included in their package can watch AT&T SportsNet Southwest live online on the channel’s official web platform, as well as on the official AT&T SportsNet app for Android and iOS mobile devices. Viewers may be required to authenticate themselves with a participating U.S. TV provider.
AT&T SportsNet’s streaming service comes at no additional cost to subscribers; however, not all content may be available. In the past, users have witnessed restrictions in the delivery of NHL and MLS content on the digital platform. Depending on the location from which the streams are being accessed, some events may be blacked out. As another option, users may also watch AT&T SportsNet Southwest on fuboTV – a partner over-the-top (OTT) streaming service that carries many of the most popular sports television networks in the United States.
