Colombia make their first World Cup appearance in 16 years, but will have to deal with Greece without talismanic striker Radamel Falcao.

Earlier this month, the Colombian national team and their supporters were dealt a huge blow when it was announced that Radamel Falcao would not be featuring in Brazil. The Monaco attacker had been a key part of Los Cafeteros making a return to the World Cup for the first time in 16 years, scoring nine goals during their qualifying campaign.

Given the nature of their group, which contains upcoming opponents Greece, Japan, and the Ivory Coast, Falcao's absence will be even more felt. More concerning is that, up until their 3-0 win over Jordan, Jose Pekerman's men had failed to win any of their friendlies this year following the injury to the former Atletico Madrid star.

Still, they do have quite a few players of quality, including Falcao's Monaco teammate James Rodriguez and Porto star Jackson Martinez. And many of the additional names will be familiar to Serie A followers, with the likes of Victor Ibarbo (Cagliari), Cristian Zapata (Milan), Fredy Guarin (Inter), Juan Cuadrado (Fiorentina), and captain Mario Yepes (previously Milan, now with Atalanta) all earning their spots in the squad.

However, whether the team will be able to successfully navigate their group still remains an open question, but they could find things tough against Greece, who are known for putting men behind the ball and hope to get a chance or two to counter-attack. After all, that is how they got out of their group at EURO 2012 and more important, won the tournament eight years prior, so there is no reason for them to suddenly deviate from that plan.

The Greeks will also have an eye on their upcoming matches with Didier Drogba's Ivory coast and a Japanese side headlined by Milan's Keisuke Honda. Both these teams will pose a serious threat to their aspirations to finally make it out of their group in their third World Cup attempt. But, as any football fan should know by now--never underestimate Greece, as they have clearly proven that they are a team more than capable of pulling off an upset or two.

For one side, this could represent an opportunity to put on a good showing for their fans after a long hiatus. For the other, their supporters will be hoping that third time will be the charm after two disappointing performances in their last two World Cup tournaments.
