Eddie Pope, a club legend scored his first MLS goal on August 18, 1996. D. C. United made history when the club defeated Club Leon 2-0 in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifnal on August 14, 1998, two days later a Eddie Pope goal helped D. C.
