About

TNT history, coverage, features

TNT, also known as TNT Drama in some areas, is a basic cable television channel in the USA. It is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery and broadcasts a variety of programming, including live sports, alongside its sister networks TBS and TruTV.

The channel was launched in October 1987 as Turner Network Television, initially focusing on broadcasting movies, mainly from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). However, in 2001, TNT shifted its focus towards drama and feature films while simultaneously increasing its live sporting events, including the NBA, NHL, U.S. Soccer, the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament, and professional wrestling.

One of the most prominent soccer competitions featured on TNT is the UEFA Champions League. The channel acquired the U.S. broadcast rights to both the Champions League and the UEFA Europa League starting with the 2018-2019 season.

Under this agreement, TNT televised 46 Champions League games and the finals of both competitions to its viewers, while the remaining fixtures were made available on B/R Live, the streaming service of its sister sports news website, Bleacher Report. However, TNT ended this three-year broadcast rights deal a year early in 2020.

Additionally, TNT also televised live 2025 FIFA Club World Cup matches in English in the USA after the tournament’s official broadcaster, DAZN, sublicensed 24 matches to TNT Sports. Select matches were broadcast live on this channel, with sister networks TBS and TruTV assisting in coverage, airing the group stage, knockout round, and the final between Chelsea and PSG.

Major U.S. sports have also been aired by TNT, including the NBA and NFL, which the channel began broadcasting in 1989 and 1990, respectively. TNT has aired the National Basketball Association’s regular season, playoffs, All-Star Game, and Conference Finals, before ultimately ending its NBA broadcast deal in July 2024.

TNT acquired the broadcast rights to the National Hockey League in 2021, which includes 72 exclusive regular-season matches per season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Furthermore, college basketball, NASCAR, the PGA Championship, and overflow coverage of Major League Baseball have also been featured on the channel.

TNT is available in up to 1080i HD quality and is recognized as one of the first U.S. channels to offer a high-definition feed. The channel has maintained cable, satellite, and streaming television carriage throughout its history, being offered by major providers such as DirecTV, Spectrum, Dish, Xfinity, and Hulu + Live TV.

Additionally, viewers can stream the channel on Max, the TNT website, and the TNT app. The latter two options require viewers to log in with an existing cable, satellite, or live television streaming subscription that includes TNT.
