Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami, also known as Inter Miami CF or simply Inter Miami, is an American professional soccer club based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The team was founded in 2018 and is nicknamed “The Herons” by its supporters. Inter Miami currently plays all its home matches at the DRV PNK Stadium, a 21,000 seater venue - but is anticipated to move to a new stadium in 2025.
The club is currently owned by English icon David Beckham, alongside businessmen Jorge and Jose Mas. Inter Miami’s 2023 signing of Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi predictably made major waves not just in Major League Soccer but around the world as it marked a huge turning point for MLS, who had attracted several big name players in the past but none at the level of Messi. In 2023, the team also won its first ever major title after beating Nashville on penalties to clinch the Leagues Cup - and thus secure a spot in the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup for the first time in club history.
At the moment, Inter Miami’s biggest rival is perhaps Orlando City, especially given that the two teams are the only Florida-based teams in MLS. Certainly, with Major League Soccer continuing to grow and expand, it is possible that there will be other teams who will eventually become future rivals of Inter Miami.
