NIFL Premiership History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The NIFL Premiership, also known as the Irish Premiership, is the highest division league in Northern Ireland. Founded in 2008, it was previously known as the IFA Premiership until 2013.
A total of 12 teams compete in this league, with the season split into two phases. In the first phase, each club faces every other club three times for a total of 33 Matchdays. In the following phase, the top six teams face off in a single round-robin format to determine the champion and who qualifies for Europe. Similarly, the bottom six lock horns to decide who gets relegated.
The worst performers drop down to the NIFL Championship, the second division. The NIFL Premiership season typically kicks off in August.
