S4C History, Coverage, Features
S4C, which stands for Channel Four Wales, is a free-to-air television channel in Wales. It is the fourth oldest television channel in the UK and the first channel in history to be aimed at a Welsh-speaking audience. It was launched on November 1, 1982 following a large number of complaints from Welsh-speaking audiences, who demanded a channel that offered them entertainment in their native language at convenient times during the day, which was not the case with other options back in the day.
S4C does not produce programs on its own. Most of its content comes from BBC Cymru Wales and other independent producers. S4C has made a name for itself for offering children’s animation shows. Added to those shows, S4C has added a news bulletin, soap operas, and entertainment programs in English but with the option to turn on Welsh subtitles. The shows that are being aired in English have the option to be subtitled in Welsh.
S4C launched an initial HD feed on July 19, 2010 known as Clirlun. Unfortunately, the channel was shut down due to budget cuts. S4C would eventually pick up that feed with a new HD channel which started broadcasting on June 7, 2016.
S4C is available on most regions of the United Kingdom via terrestrial feeds or with a pay-tv subscription, with both the SD and HD feeds available for users. Check availability with your local pay-tv carrier.
