About
RTE 2 History, Coverage, Features
RTÉ 2 is an Irish television channel property by the state-owned Raidio Teilifís Éireann. It is the sister channel to RTÉ One, which is often regarded as the most watched television channel in Ireland. RTÉ 2 was originally launched on November 2, 1978 under its current name, but the channel suffered two rebrandings over the years; first as Network 2 (from 1988 to 2004) and was later known as RTÉ Two in 2004. RTÉ 2 recovered its original name in 2014.
RTÉ 2 has a similar approach as its sister channel regarding its schedule, but the main difference between the two is that RTÉ 2 airs most of RTE’s sports content, which usually earns the highest ratings for the channel and the network itself. Over the years, RTÉ 2 has covered sports such as football, athletics, cycling, extreme sports, golf, hockey, racquet sports, scuba diving, target shooting, triathlon, rugby, and water sports.
RTÉ 2 has made a name for itself when it comes to covering high-profile sports events in the world, such as the FIFA World Cup, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Olympic games, and the UEFA European Championship.
Speaking about football, RTÉ 2 has covered UEFA Champions League games, the League of Ireland, FAI Cup matches, and the English Premier League. RTÉ 2 has also broadcast friendly and competitive games for the Irish National Football Team in the past.
RTÉ 2 is available on the Irish free-to-air terrestrial service, but it is also available on most pay-tv carriers in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Northern Ireland. Check local listings for further details.
