About Serie D
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Serie D is the highest level of amateur (non-professional) football in Italy, and represents the fourth tier of Italian football. It was founded in 1948 under the name Promozione, before becoming IV Serie (fourth division) a few years later followed by Serie D in 1959. The league underwent a few more name changes in the ensuing decades before returning to the current name of Serie D in 1999.
Serie D is run under the guidance of the Lega Nazionale Dilettanti (National Amateur League) and is organized by the Comitato Interregionale (Interregional Committee). In its current format, Serie D is divided into nine different regional divisions. The league, like others in Italy, in Europe, and elsewhere around the world, operates on a relegation-promotion scheme. At the end of each season, a set number of teams are promoted to Serie C, while a set number are demoted to the Eccellenza (fifth tier).
In addition, at the end of each season, the winners of each division in Serie D feature in an additional tournament to determine who wins the Scudetto Dilettanti (amateur championship title). The nine teams are put into groups of three during which each team plays each other once, and from this, the winners of each group plus the best-placed second placed team (on points total) heads to the semi-finals and so on.
Due to the sheer number of teams competing in Serie D, no one team has really dominated the landscape as far as winning the Scudetto Dilettanti each season.
In terms of media coverage, various Serie D matches have been covered on TV and live-streamed by different entities in Italy, including Sportitalia, Rai Sport, and Eleven Sports, while matches are also offered on the league’s website and social media channels.
