About Premier League
The Ethiopian Premier League, as the name says, is the top-flight championship in the country of Ethiopia. The competition, as we know it today, was founded in 1997 – or 1990, as per the Ethiopian Calendar. It replaced the former first division league which began back in 1944.
The campaign typically kicks off in November and the league boasts a double round-robin system, meaning each team will face every other club both home and away per season. The Ethiopian top-flight boasts a promotion/relegation system, with the bottom three teams at the end of the season dropping to the Ethiopian Higher League, the country’s second division. The first-placed team gets crowned the champion and is awarded a ticket to the CAF Champions League.
